Created in Tokyo by Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garcons has permeated the fashion map since the 1970’s. Celebrated in the early 80’s for deconstructed and uniform black pieces, Kawakubo’s avant garde looks are still mirroring themes of coming “undone” and loss. Similar to the way an artist transfers raw expression by paintbrush, Kawakubo’s use of fabric and cloth are tools to transfer emotion onto the runway. Her designs are felt, not so much worn.
Her commercial designs however, mimic a more playful energy. Signature heart faces and red appliqué stamp dress shirts, polos, sweatshirts, and durable cotton tees:
